The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has rejected claims that Christians or any other religious group are facing genocide in Nigeria, insisting that the country’s insecurity affects citizens regardless of their faith.

The position was contained in a communiqué issued after the council’s General Assembly held at the Abuja National Mosque on October 1, 2026, and signed by the Sultan of Sokoto and NSCIA President-General, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, alongside the council’s Secretary-General, Professor Is-haq Oloyede.

The council said Nigeria’s security crisis should not be viewed solely through a religious lens, stressing that people from different faiths have been affected by insecurity.

It stated that there was “no genocide of Christians or any religious community in Nigeria as claimed in some quarters”.
