Controversial Anambra-based cleric, Prophet Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, popularly known as Odumeje, has criticised the government over what he described as excessive celebration surrounding the maintenance of the Onitsha Head Bridge.
Odumeje made the remarks in a viral video shared on social media, questioning why the maintenance of the decades-old bridge was being presented as a major achievement.
The prophet expressed frustration over the attention being given to the bridge following the maintenance work, arguing that the structure had existed for decades and should not be treated as a newly constructed project.
In his remarks, Odumeje warned against what he described as celebrating the maintenance of an old bridge, using a comparison with someone repainting a car that had been parked for more than 50 years.
He also questioned the decision to prominently showcase the bridge online, saying the presentation could give the impression that a new bridge had been constructed.
Comments spark reactions
Odumeje’s remarks have generated mixed reactions on social media, with some users supporting his criticism while others disagreed with his position.
Some commenters argued that residents should not be expected to celebrate the repainting or maintenance of an ageing bridge, while others defended the government and said the maintenance work was worthy of recognition.
The controversy comes amid renewed public attention on infrastructure projects in the South-East, particularly the condition and maintenance of major roads and bridges serving the region.
Odumeje’s comments have consequently added to the online debate over whether the maintenance of existing infrastructure should be presented as a major government achievement or treated as a routine responsibility.
