Arise Television anchor Rufai Oseni has challenged former Anambra State governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi to provide evidence for his claim that he won the 2023 presidential election.
Oseni reacted after Obi, during an interview with BBC Africa, said he still believed he won the 2023 election but acknowledged that he had no evidence to prove the claim.
Obi, who contested the election under the Labour Party, maintained his position about the outcome while indicating that he did not want to dwell extensively on the past.
The former governor and other opposition candidates challenged the 2023 presidential election result in court, but the legal challenges ultimately failed.
Oseni demands evidence
Reacting during Arise TV’s Morning Show, Oseni urged Obi to be cautious about making claims that cannot be supported with verifiable evidence.
The broadcaster questioned whether Obi and his team had conducted their own detailed analysis of the election results before concluding that they had won.
Oseni specifically asked for the spreadsheets, backend analysis and collation data that could support Obi’s assertion.
He argued that repeatedly claiming victory without presenting supporting evidence could undermine the credibility of the claim and cause people to take Obi less seriously.
“Mr Peter Obi, it is best you do not say things if you do not have the evidence,” Oseni said.
He also questioned why the former governor had not produced his own result-by-result analysis to substantiate the claim.
Obi’s position
Obi has continued to maintain that he won the 2023 presidential election despite the official result and subsequent court decisions.
The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Bola Tinubu the winner of the 2023 presidential election, while Obi’s legal challenge to the outcome was unsuccessful.
Oseni’s latest comments have added another dimension to the ongoing debate over the 2023 election, particularly as Obi prepares for another presidential contest under the NDC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The exchange also comes amid increased scrutiny of statements by political figures as parties and candidates intensify preparations for the next election.
