The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has outlined the conditions under which eligible foreign nationals can enlist in its military, offering a potential pathway for some non-Australian citizens to serve in the country’s armed forces.
Under the standard recruitment pathway, applicants must be citizens of eligible countries and meet additional residency, security and military service requirements.
According to the ADF’s recruitment guidelines, eligible applicants include citizens of New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Papua New Guinea, subject to the applicable entry conditions.
Key Requirements for Foreign Applicants
Applicants seeking to join the Australian Defence Force through the standard pathway must satisfy several conditions.
These include holding eligible immigration or residency status in Australia, having lived in the country for at least 12 months immediately before applying, and meeting the military’s entry and security standards.
Applicants must also not have served in a foreign military during the two years preceding their application.
The rules are part of Australia’s efforts to widen its recruitment pool and address staffing needs within its armed forces.
