Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has expressed confidence that the club will overturn the verdict against it in its appeal over alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations.
Maresca made the remarks on Friday during his first press conference since an independent commission found the club guilty of more than 100 breaches of financial rules.
The Italian manager said he had complete faith in Manchester City’s ownership and management, insisting that his trust in the club was a major reason he accepted the managerial position.
“I completely trust the club,” Maresca said. “I trust the club because I trust the people, and this is also the reason why I joined the club. There is not another club in the world where I would like to be.”
Manchester City have consistently denied wrongdoing and lodged an appeal against the commission’s findings on October 1, arguing that the verdict contains significant errors of law, principle
The independent commission found that the club had breached financial regulations over a nine-season period between 2009 and 2018. The findings included allegations relating to commercial contracts and the reporting of financial information.
Maresca also rejected suggestions that the club’s trophy-winning achievements over the past decade and a half had been tainted by the verdict.
“Absolutely not,” he said when asked whether the findings had cast a shadow over Manchester City’s silverware.
The former Chelsea manager pointed to the efforts of the players, coaching staff and club officials, particularly during Pep Guardiola’s tenure, as reasons he continued to believe in the team’s achievements.
Manchester City could face significant sporting sanctions if the appeal fails, although the final outcome and any potential punishment remain subject to the ongoing proceedings.
Maresca, meanwhile, insisted that his immediate priority was football, with City preparing to face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
