Super Eagles Camp Tension Deepens as Players Await What They Earned

Fresh concerns have emerged within Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, with reports of unpaid bonuses, reduced allowances and dissatisfaction over player welfare raising questions about the atmosphere surrounding the Super Eagles.

The players are reportedly still awaiting their winning bonuses for Nigeria’s third-place play-off victory over Egypt at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite receiving payments for earlier matches.

Nigeria secured the bronze medal after defeating Egypt on penalties in January 2026, but the bonus attached to that victory is said to remain outstanding several months later.

The reported financial concerns extend beyond the unpaid bonus. Some players are also said to be unhappy with reductions in their allowances during the recent 2027 AFCON qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, allegedly introduced without prior notice.

Nigeria began the qualifying campaign with a 2–1 victory over Madagascar before suffering a disappointing 3–0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

Dressing-Room Protest Adds to Concerns

The reported grievances are not limited to payments. Concerns have also been raised about travel arrangements, logistics and the general welfare of the team during international assignments.

Reports indicate that some players protested in the dressing room before the Guinea-Bissau encounter over concerns about the playing conditions. The pitch subsequently attracted criticism following Nigeria’s defeat.

Head coach Eric Chelle and members of the squad were also reported to have expressed dissatisfaction with the condition of the playing surface.

The latest developments have renewed concerns about the management of the national team, particularly as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its position in the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

NFF Yet to Publicly Address Reported Grievances

As of the latest reports, none of the players involved has publicly confirmed the alleged complaints, while no official response from the Nigeria Football Federation has been reported regarding the specific claims.

It also remains unclear when the outstanding bonus will be paid or whether the reported reductions in allowances and logistical concerns will be addressed.

The Super Eagles players have since returned to their respective clubs following the international break.

With the team facing pressure to improve its performances, resolving the reported welfare concerns could prove important in maintaining harmony between the players and football authorities.
