American rapper Nicki Minaj has called on celebrities, social media influencers and other prominent figures to draw greater attention to reports of violence against Christians in Nigeria.
The award-winning musician made the appeal during the X Takeover event at Tesla’s Giga Texas facility in Austin, Texas, where she spoke about her personal connection to Nigeria and her concerns about the treatment of Christians in the country.
Minaj explained that her Nigerian pastor and large Nigerian fan base, popularly known as the Barbz, had strengthened her connection to the country.
“My pastor is from Nigeria, so I have a link to Nigeria because of him, and I have a lot of Nigerian Barbz. Why isn’t anyone making a big deal out of the brutality in which Christians are being treated in Nigeria?” she asked.
The rapper expressed concern that issues which are considered unpopular or uncomfortable to discuss often receive limited attention from influential people.
She urged more public figures to use their platforms to raise awareness about the situation and encourage action.
“I’m hoping that more celebrities or people, influencers, come on board to start speaking out about what’s happening to Christians in Nigeria,” she said, adding that she hoped to do more to support the cause.
Minaj’s latest comments have renewed conversations about insecurity and religiously motivated violence in Nigeria, where attacks on communities and places of worship remain a major concern.
The Nigerian government has previously disputed characterisations of the country’s security crisis as a systematic campaign against Christians, while maintaining that insecurity affects people across different communities.
Her appeal adds to her previous public comments on religious freedom and the need to protect people from violence because of their faith.
