Planning a UK Trip? These Travellers May Not Need a Traditional Visa

Travelling to the United Kingdom does not always require a traditional visa, but the rules depend on a visitor’s nationality, the purpose of the trip and the length of stay.

Under the UK’s immigration system, eligible nationals from certain countries can visit for tourism, family visits or other permitted short-term activities without applying for a standard visitor visa in advance. However, many of these travellers must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure.

An ETA is a digital travel permission linked to a traveller’s passport. It is not a visa and does not guarantee entry into the UK, as border officers retain the authority to assess visitors on arrival.

Who Can Visit Without a Traditional Visa?

Citizens of eligible visa-exempt countries may travel to the UK for short visits, generally for up to six months, subject to the applicable immigration conditions.

Depending on nationality and circumstances, visitors may need an ETA before boarding their flight. Travellers from countries whose citizens require a visa must obtain the appropriate visa before travelling.

The rules also differ for people visiting to work, study for longer periods, settle in the UK or undertake activities not permitted under standard visitor conditions.
