Military Retirees Block Pensions Board Entrance in Abuja Over Disputed Payments

Retired Nigerian military personnel have staged a protest at the Military Pensions Board office in Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, over alleged discrepancies in the calculation of their revised pensions.

The protesters are demanding a review of the pension adjustment formula, insisting that the payments credited to their accounts do not reflect what they expected following recent salary adjustments for serving military personnel.

The demonstration comes weeks after military retirees protested at the Ministry of Defence, seeking improved pension payments and the settlement of outstanding entitlements.

Veterans Question Pension Calculation Formula

The Coordinator of the Veterans Association of Nigeria, Lt Col Innocent Azubike, said the retirees were dissatisfied with the method used by the board to calculate the new pension rates.

According to him, the formula could leave retired personnel of the same rank and with similar years of service receiving different amounts simply because they retired at different times.

The veterans are calling for greater transparency in the calculation process and a comprehensive review of payments to determine whether any retirees have been underpaid.

Retirees Demand Audit and Payment Review

The protesters are seeking a forensic audit of the Military Pensions Board to establish how funds allocated for pension adjustments have been managed.

They also want the authorities to publish clear guidelines explaining how the revised rates are calculated and to correct any discrepancies identified during the review.

The veterans argue that the issue goes beyond the size of the increase, insisting that the formula must be applied fairly and consistently to eligible retirees.

Pensions Board Says Revised Rates Are Being Implemented

The Military Pensions Board has maintained that it has commenced implementing the newly approved pension rates following adjustments linked to the national minimum wage.

The board also said applicable arrears had been processed, with payments to pensioners’ accounts beginning on October 2, 2026.

Its chairman, Air Vice Marshal M. Abdulraheem, reiterated the board’s commitment to ensuring that retired military personnel benefit from approved wage and pension adjustments.

The dispute highlights continuing concerns over the welfare of retired military personnel, who are demanding clear explanations of their entitlements and assurances that their pensions are calculated accurately.
