The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ridiculed former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi over his recent town hall meeting in Cross River State, claiming that fewer than 200 people attended the gathering.

Wike made the remarks on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, during his monthly media chat, while responding to suggestions that the proposed opposition presidential ticket involving former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Amaechi could pose a challenge to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Wike Questions Amaechi’s Election Prediction

According to Wike, Amaechi had expressed confidence that Atiku would win the 2027 presidential election, basing his argument on the regional origins of prominent political figures expected to contest the poll.

The FCT minister questioned the reasoning behind the prediction, arguing that electoral outcomes could not be determined simply by grouping candidates according to their regions.

Wike also referred to the 2023 presidential election, when Atiku contested against Tinubu and Peter Obi, asking which candidate eventually emerged victorious.

He insisted that the 2027 election would differ from the previous contest.

“I’ve always told you people, 2027 will be totally different from 2023,” Wike said.

Minister Questions Attendance at Town Hall

Wike also took aim at the attendance at Amaechi’s Cross River engagement, claiming that the number of people present was fewer than 200.

He questioned why a political figure seeking national office would tell supporters that the election had effectively been decided.

The minister’s comments form part of the growing exchange between political figures aligned with different camps ahead of the 2027 general election.

However, Wike’s claim about attendance was not independently verified in the reports reviewed.

Political Tensions Rise Ahead of 2027

The exchange comes as political parties and opposition figures intensify consultations and mobilisation ahead of the next presidential election.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation, has recently criticised aspects of the Tinubu administration’s economic policies and infrastructure priorities during engagements with supporters in Cross River State.

Wike, meanwhile, has continued to express support for Tinubu’s re-election bid and has questioned the opposition’s ability to translate its political alliances into electoral support.

With the 2027 election approaching, further exchanges between political leaders are expected as parties seek to strengthen their positions and persuade voters.
