The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he supported Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma’s re-election bid despite his political relationship with Sam Anyanwu, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national secretary.

Wike made the disclosure while addressing the ongoing political disagreement between himself and Uzodinma, amid tensions over political alliances and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The minister’s comments highlight the political relationships that have shaped his dealings with leaders across party lines.

Wike Recalls Supporting Uzodinma

According to reports, Wike said he backed Uzodinma for a second term despite his relationship with Anyanwu, who contested the 2023 Imo State governorship election on the PDP platform.

Uzodinma, the APC candidate, won the election and secured another term as governor.

Wike’s account suggests that his political decisions have not always followed party loyalties, as he has supported candidates outside his party when he considered it necessary.

Disagreement Over Political Alliances

The latest remarks come amid disagreements between Wike and Uzodinma over political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wike has maintained that his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election does not mean he has abandoned the PDP or agreed that the party should refrain from fielding candidates in governorship and legislative elections.

Uzodinma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum, has also been involved in discussions concerning the APC’s electoral strategy and its relationship with political groups outside the ruling party.

Political Implications Ahead of 2027

The disagreement reflects the complexities of Nigeria’s political alliances as parties and influential figures prepare for the next general election.

Although Wike has pledged to mobilise support for Tinubu, he has insisted that such support should not prevent other parties from contesting elections at state and legislative levels.

The extent to which these competing interests will affect cooperation among political leaders remains to be seen as preparations for 2027 continue.
