Nigerian cleric Pastor Emmanuel Iren has highlighted the contributions of Christian institutions to Nigeria’s development, pointing to prominent political leaders who attended schools established by missionary organisations.

The pastor made the remarks during a sermon, stressing that the influence of Christianity in the country extends beyond religious activities to include significant contributions to education, healthcare and community development.

To support his argument, Iren referenced Igbobi College in Lagos, an institution established in 1932 through the collaboration of Anglican and Methodist churches. He mentioned former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola and former House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila as notable alumni of the school.

He also cited Baptist Boys’ High School in Abeokuta, Ogun State, which was founded by Baptist missionaries and attended by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Questioning those who dismiss the church’s contributions to society, Iren argued that the achievements of graduates from mission-founded institutions demonstrate the lasting influence of Christian organisations on Nigeria.

Pastor Highlights Missionary Contributions to Education and Healthcare

Iren maintained that Christian missionaries played an important role in expanding access to formal education and healthcare in Nigeria, particularly during periods when such services were limited in many communities.

According to the pastor, numerous schools established by Christian organisations have produced generations of Nigerians who have gone on to occupy influential positions in government, business and other sectors.

He also pointed to the establishment of hospitals and other medical facilities by Christian missions as evidence of the church’s historical involvement in social development.

His remarks have renewed discussions about the role of religious organisations in shaping Nigeria’s educational and healthcare systems, as well as their contribution to producing leaders who have influenced the country’s political and public life.

Through his comments, Iren urged Nigerians to recognise the broader historical contributions of Christian institutions and consider their impact beyond the religious sphere.
