United States President Donald Trump has shared a video showing conditions at El Salvador’s notorious maximum-security prison, defending his administration’s deportation policy and linking it to what he described as record-low crime rates in the US.
Trump shared the footage on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, alongside a message stating that the facility was where his administration sends people it considers dangerous criminals.
“THIS IS WHERE WE SEND OUR KILLERS, DRUG DEALERS & THUGS. THIS IS WHY MURDER AND OTHER CRIMES IN AMERICA ARE AT RECORD LOWS,” he wrote.
The video features the Terrorism Confinement Center, popularly known as CECOT, a high-security prison located in Tecoluca, El Salvador.
The facility, designed to accommodate up to 40,000 inmates, has attracted international attention because of its strict security arrangements and restrictive conditions. Reports indicate that between 65 and 70 prisoners may be housed in individual cells.
Trump Defends Deportation Policy
The president’s post comes amid his administration’s efforts to remove migrants it identifies as criminal threats from the United States, including arrangements to transfer some deportees to El Salvador.
The policy involves cooperation between the US government and the administration of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, whose government has pursued an aggressive crackdown on criminal gangs.
Under the arrangement, some migrants deported from the United States have been detained at CECOT. However, questions have been raised over the circumstances of certain deportations and the legal procedures followed in individual cases.
Trump has repeatedly presented the policy as part of his broader effort to tackle crime and strengthen public safety in the United States.
CECOT Draws International Attention
CECOT was established as part of El Salvador’s campaign against organised criminal gangs. Its scale, strict confinement measures and treatment of detainees have made it a subject of international debate.
Supporters of the prison policy argue that strict detention measures are necessary to combat violent crime and organised criminal networks. Critics, however, have raised concerns about due process, detention conditions and the rights of people sent to the facility.
Trump’s latest post has renewed attention on the prison and the growing security cooperation between Washington and San Salvador.
Although the US president linked the deportation policy to falling crime rates, his social media statement alone does not establish that the transfers were responsible for the reported decline.
The development highlights the continuing debate over immigration enforcement, criminal justice and the balance between public safety and individual rights.
