Finnish Appeal Court Cuts Simon Ekpa’s Jail Term From Six Years to Four

A Finnish Court of Appeal has reduced the prison sentence of pro-Biafra separatist Simon Ekpa from six years to four years while upholding his convictions on terrorism-related offences.

The East Finland Court of Appeal delivered its ruling on Thursday, 15 October 2026, following Ekpa’s appeal against the sentence imposed by a lower court in September 2025.

The court upheld his convictions for participating in the activities of a terrorist group and publicly inciting crimes for terrorist purposes.

However, it reduced his prison term after considering the circumstances surrounding the offences. The appeal court found that the conditions in which the crimes were committed closely resembled circumstances associated with situations such as civil war, self-defence and necessity, which can affect criminal liability under Finnish law.

Ekpa’s case relates to activities connected with efforts to establish an independent Biafran state in south-eastern Nigeria between 2021 and 2024.

The latest ruling means that his terrorism-related convictions remain intact, but his prison sentence has been reduced by two years.

The decision marks a significant development in the legal case against the separatist figure, whose activities and influence have been the subject of controversy in Nigeria and Finland.
