NYSC May Halt Postings to Cross River Over Dilapidated Orientation Camp

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) may suspend the posting of corps members to Cross River State following concerns over the deteriorating condition of its permanent orientation camp in Obubra.

The development followed an inspection of the facility by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, who reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the camp and questioned its suitability for hosting corps members.

According to a report by Vanguard, a source within the scheme disclosed that the proposed suspension could take effect after the ongoing 2026 Batch C, Stream One orientation exercise, potentially affecting the next stream scheduled to begin in November.

The source said the camp’s facilities had become outdated and no longer met the required standards, adding that a new orientation camp might be necessary.

The Obubra facility, which occupies the former Government Science School premises, has reportedly operated for more than two decades without major renovation.

The report indicated that the camp, which previously accommodated about 2,500 corps members per stream, now hosts slightly more than 1,000. It also stated that more than 700 corps members were reportedly processing relocation to other states.

Cross River is expected to receive approximately 6,000 corps members annually, but the condition of the camp has reportedly contributed to a decline in the number accommodated.

The NYSC is said to be seeking the intervention of the Cross River State Government to address the infrastructure problems.

However, the reported suspension has not been independently confirmed by an official NYSC announcement. CrossRiverWatch reported on Thursday that, although the Director-General acknowledged the camp’s infrastructure challenges during his visit, the organisation had not publicly confirmed a decision to suspend postings to the state.

The development has renewed calls for state governments to improve and maintain orientation camps to ensure the safety, welfare and comfort of corps members during their compulsory national service.
