Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to respond to comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, about the 2027 presidential election.
VDM expressed his displeasure in a viral video, questioning why INEC had not publicly addressed Wike’s remarks suggesting that the ruling party had already secured victory in the FCT ahead of the election.
Wike had reportedly said his political focus was to prevent opposition parties from reaching the 25 per cent vote threshold in the territory, adding that the ruling party had already won the FCT.
Reacting, VDM questioned how any political figure could declare victory before Nigerians had cast their ballots. He argued that such statements could undermine public confidence in the electoral process and leave voters feeling that their votes would not count.
The activist insisted that INEC remained the body legally responsible for conducting elections and announcing official results. He urged the commission’s chairman to clarify its position and address the concerns raised by Wike’s comments.
VDM also stressed that he had no objection to politicians campaigning for their preferred candidates, but maintained that political activities should not create the impression that election outcomes had already been decided.
He recalled his participation in previous elections, saying citizens had a responsibility to protect the integrity of the voting process and ensure their voices were heard.
The activist further criticised what he described as political impunity, arguing that Nigerians deserved reassurance that the 2027 elections would be determined by votes cast at the polls.
His comments have added to the debate surrounding Wike’s political activities in the FCT and the responsibility of electoral authorities to maintain public trust ahead of the next general election.
