Manchester United have fined defender Lisandro Martínez following his public criticism of the club’s leadership after their 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
The club has reportedly considered the matter resolved after the Argentina international held discussions with manager Michael Carrick and senior officials to address his comments.
Martínez, 28, expressed frustration after Tuesday’s defeat, arguing that Manchester United had failed to strengthen their squad sufficiently during the summer transfer window. He also questioned the club’s recruitment strategy and called for greater investment to help the team compete at the highest level.
The defender specifically criticised director of football Jason Wilcox, saying he expected more from the club’s technical leadership. He also argued that responsibility for the team’s struggles should not rest solely on the manager and players.
Following the remarks, Martínez met with Carrick, Wilcox, chief executive Omar Berrada and other senior club officials at the club’s Carrington training ground.
Reports indicated that the meeting was constructive, with both sides given an opportunity to discuss the situation and clarify their positions.
After the talks, Martínez issued a public apology on social media, acknowledging that his frustration following the defeat had influenced his decision to speak out.
He explained that although he was passionate about football and eager to see Manchester United succeed, the timing and manner of his comments were inappropriate.
The defender also emphasised the importance of unity within the club, adding that everyone at Manchester United was working towards the shared ambition of restoring the team’s success.
According to reports by football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the club imposed a fine as a formal disciplinary measure and has now closed the case. The exact amount of the fine has not been disclosed.
Despite the resolution of the immediate dispute, questions remain about Martínez’s long-term future at Old Trafford. His current contract is due to expire at the end of the 2026/27 season, although Manchester United have the option to extend it for another year.
The incident comes amid a difficult period for United, whose performances have raised concerns about recruitment, squad depth and the club’s overall direction.
Manchester United will now look to move past the controversy and focus on their upcoming fixtures, beginning with their Premier League trip to Leeds United on Sunday, October 18.
