The Rivers State Police Command has removed two senior officers from their positions following allegations that suspected cult members renovated the Abuloma Police Outpost in Port Harcourt and later visited the facility to celebrate the completion of the project.
The affected officers are the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the police outpost. Both officers have been queried and relieved of their duties pending the outcome of an investigation.
The development followed the circulation of a video on social media showing suspected cult members at the renovated facility on Thursday, October 15, 2026, celebrating the completion of the renovation alongside some police personnel.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 16, the command’s spokesperson, ASP Agabe Kaborlo, said the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Police Investigate Funding and Approval of Renovation
The police said the investigation would establish the identities of the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the renovation and determine whether the project received the necessary authorisation.
Investigators will also examine the roles played by police personnel, whether established procedures were followed and whether any officer breached professional standards or compromised the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
The command condemned any conduct or association capable of giving suspected cult groups recognition, legitimacy or influence through police institutions.
It stressed that police stations and outposts are public facilities established to protect citizens and enforce the law, warning that they must not become platforms for criminal groups to gain public acceptance.
Police Clarify Position on Community Donations
Despite the controversy, the command acknowledged that members of the public could legitimately contribute towards improving police facilities.
It cited Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund.
However, the police emphasised that such assistance must comply with the law and must not compromise police independence, security or professional standards.
The command also warned that making donations or providing assistance to the police does not exempt anyone from investigation or prosecution.
It maintained that any officer found to have engaged in misconduct or maintained an improper relationship with criminal elements would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
Police Promise Action After Investigation
The Commissioner of Police has directed investigators to establish the full circumstances surrounding the renovation and determine whether any laws or police regulations were violated.
The command assured residents that appropriate disciplinary and legal action would be taken against anyone found culpable.
It reiterated its commitment to tackling cultism and organised crime across Rivers State while urging residents to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist security agencies.
The investigation is expected to clarify who financed the renovation, whether the work was properly approved and whether any police personnel acted contrary to established regulations. The allegations remain under investigation, and no final findings of misconduct have been announced.
