Trump Administration Bars CNN From Air Force One in Fresh Clash With Media

The administration of United States President Donald Trump has blocked CNN from travelling aboard Air Force One during his scheduled trip to Tennessee, escalating an ongoing dispute over press freedom and journalists’ access to the president.

CNN had been expected to accompany Trump on Saturday, 26 September, as part of the rotating television press pool covering his visit to Knoxville for a college football game. However, the White House excluded the network from its travel arrangements, according to reports by The Guardian and other US media outlets.

The decision came days after CNN, MS NOW and Politico were barred from the White House grounds over what Trump described as unfavourable and misleading coverage of his administration.

Trump has repeatedly accused major media organisations of publishing what he calls “fake news”, arguing that outlets critical of his presidency should not enjoy privileged access to the White House.

The restrictions triggered a backlash among journalists, with other television networks temporarily suspending their shared video coverage of presidential events in solidarity with the affected organisations.

The dispute took a legal turn after CNN, MS NOW and Politico challenged the restrictions in court, arguing that the administration’s actions violated their First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and the press.

US District Judge Timothy Kelly subsequently ordered the temporary restoration of the organisations’ access to the White House while the legal case proceeds.

However, the ruling did not explicitly resolve the separate question of CNN’s participation in the presidential travel pool aboard Air Force One.

The White House’s decision to exclude CNN from the Tennessee trip has therefore renewed concerns about whether government officials can restrict journalists’ access because of disagreements over their reporting.

The controversy also highlights the importance of the presidential press pool, a long-standing arrangement through which a small group of journalists covers events involving the president and shares its footage and reports with other media organisations.

The latest confrontation has intensified the wider debate over press freedom, government accountability and the relationship between the Trump administration and the American media.
