The Rotary Club of Yenagoa Sunshine has donated 50 classroom chairs to Luxuriant Mission Academy in Azikoro, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, as part of efforts to improve learning conditions for pupils and promote literacy.
The intervention, which benefits 185 pupils, also includes a modern writing board, classroom flooring and other educational support materials aimed at creating a more conducive learning environment.
The project was inaugurated by the District Governor of Rotary International District 9141, Anthony Chibueze Olikagu, alongside other Rotary officials, school representatives and community stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, the club’s president, Onyaye Edgar Kunle-Olowu, said the initiative was inspired by the poor state of facilities she encountered during an earlier visit to the school.
She explained that the experience prompted her to mobilise the club’s management and partners to address the challenges facing the institution.
Kunle-Olowu said the BRED Literacy Project reflected Rotary’s commitment to education and sustainable community development.
In his remarks, Olikagu commended the club for identifying the school’s needs and taking practical steps to address them. He also highlighted literacy as an important part of Rotary’s broader humanitarian efforts.
Luxuriant Mission Academy, which operates both primary and secondary sections, has reportedly faced infrastructural challenges despite serving its community for more than a decade.
The school’s principal, Ann Aganaba, expressed appreciation to the club and its partners, noting that the improved facilities would make learning more comfortable for the pupils.
The children also expressed their excitement through songs, dance and drama during the event.
The initiative underscores the importance of partnerships between service organisations and local communities in improving educational facilities and expanding learning opportunities for children.
