Gunmen have killed an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and abducted a businessman in Pushit community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, raising fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in the area.

The attack reportedly occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, October 19, despite a dusk-to-dawn curfew recently imposed in parts of the area following repeated security incidents.

A community member, Lawrence Tabitha, said the deceased officer, a Deputy Superintendent of the NSCDC, was riding his motorcycle near his residence when the armed men shot him.

According to Tabitha, the gunmen had earlier abducted a businessman involved in the sale of fuel, cement and fertiliser.

He explained that the attackers were escaping with their captive when the officer’s motorcycle headlight exposed their movement, prompting them to open fire on him.

The incident has heightened anxiety among residents, who are questioning the effectiveness of the curfew and other security measures introduced to prevent further attacks.

Residents of Pushit District and neighbouring communities, including Vodni, Sabon Gari and Nchiya, have reportedly faced recurring security threats, leaving many worried about their safety.

Tabitha called on the Plateau State Government and security agencies to strengthen security operations in the affected communities and intensify efforts to rescue the abducted businessman.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to the appropriate authorities.

As of the time the incident was reported, efforts to obtain official confirmation and comments from security operatives had been unsuccessful.

The killing of the NSCDC officer and the abduction of the businessman have renewed calls for urgent intervention to protect lives and property in Mangu Local Government Area.

Residents will be hoping that security agencies can track down the perpetrators, secure the victim’s release and prevent further attacks in the district.
