Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has praised Nigerian music star Burna Boy for projecting the country’s image internationally, urging Nigerians to celebrate citizens whose achievements attract positive global attention.
Dangote shared the experience while recounting his first visit to Grenada, a Caribbean island nation, where he was struck by seeing a billboard featuring the Grammy-winning singer.
“The first time I went to Grenada, the first billboard that I saw was Burna Boy,” the billionaire businessman said.
He described Burna Boy and other successful Nigerian entertainers as important ambassadors whose influence extends beyond the country’s borders.
According to Dangote, Nigeria should pay greater attention to individuals promoting its culture and talent internationally rather than allowing negative reports about Nigerians abroad to dominate public conversations.
He argued that excessive attention to criminal incidents involving Nigerians overseas could damage the country’s reputation, stressing that similar problems exist in other countries.
Dangote urged Nigerians to celebrate people making positive contributions to the country’s image and to recognise the international reach of the creative industry.
His comments have drawn attention to the growing influence of Afrobeats, which has helped Nigerian musicians reach audiences across Europe, the Americas, the Caribbean and other parts of the world.
Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, has become one of Africa’s most prominent music exports, earning international recognition through his albums, performances and collaborations with global artists.
The singer’s achievements have helped bring Nigerian music and culture to wider audiences, reinforcing the country’s influence in the global entertainment industry.
Dangote’s remarks also highlight the role of entertainment in shaping perceptions of Nigeria abroad, alongside the contributions of business leaders, athletes, filmmakers and other professionals.
His message was that Nigeria should give greater recognition to citizens whose work showcases the country’s talent and creativity, rather than allowing negative incidents to define how the nation is viewed internationally.
The comments have sparked conversations about national image, celebrity influence and the responsibility of Nigerians to celebrate achievements that inspire pride at home and abroad.
