The Jigawa State Government has approved a new Gender in Education Policy aimed at increasing girls’ school enrolment, improving retention and reducing gender disparities across the state’s education system.
The policy was approved by the State Executive Council as part of ongoing efforts to address the challenges preventing girls from accessing and completing their education.
The initiative is expected to provide a framework for tackling barriers that affect female students, including financial difficulties, social and cultural pressures, safety concerns and limited access to educational opportunities.
By addressing these challenges, the state government hopes to encourage more parents to enrol their daughters in school and ensure that girls who are already attending classes can continue their education without unnecessary interruptions.
Focus on Enrolment and Completion
The policy is designed to improve girls’ access to education at different levels, while strengthening retention, transition between school levels and completion.
It also aligns with broader efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children and promote equal educational opportunities for boys and girls.
Jigawa has previously introduced measures to support female students, including the distribution of school uniforms, learning materials and sanitary pads to reduce the financial burden on families and encourage regular attendance.
The state government has also emphasised the importance of providing a supportive learning environment where girls can pursue their education and develop the skills needed for their future.
Tackling Barriers to Girls’ Education
Girls’ education remains a significant concern in parts of northern Nigeria, where economic hardship, early marriage, cultural expectations and inadequate school facilities can affect attendance and completion rates.
The newly approved policy is expected to strengthen the state’s response to these challenges by providing a more coordinated approach to gender inclusion in education.
Effective implementation will be crucial to ensuring that the policy translates into measurable improvements in enrolment, attendance and learning outcomes.
Implementation Expected to Be Key
The approval marks an important policy step, but its impact will depend on how effectively the government translates its objectives into practical programmes, adequate funding and monitoring mechanisms.
Stakeholder involvement, community engagement and sustained support for vulnerable families will also be important in ensuring that more girls have the opportunity to complete their education.
The initiative reinforces the importance of girls’ education as a pathway to greater economic participation, improved family welfare and long-term development in Jigawa State.
