Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the FCT to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid and candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the appeal at a stakeholders’ meeting of the Rainbow Coalition in Abuja, where political figures from different parties gathered to discuss strategies for the forthcoming elections.
The minister expressed confidence that Tinubu would win in the FCT and Rivers State, saying he had taken responsibility for coordinating the president’s re-election campaign in both areas.
He urged political stakeholders to put aside party differences and work together to secure victory for Tinubu, arguing that the coalition demonstrated how politicians could cooperate despite belonging to different political platforms.
Wike also highlighted infrastructure projects and policy reforms under the Tinubu administration, saying the government should be judged by its performance rather than campaign promises.
He maintained that the coalition would mobilise support across party lines while encouraging stakeholders to focus on development and the delivery of democratic dividends.
The minister’s position has, however, exposed divisions within the PDP over whether members should support the president’s re-election.
A faction of the party led by Tanimu Turaki has rejected the call, insisting that the PDP should provide an alternative to the ruling APC rather than support its candidate. The faction’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, described the arrangement as contrary to the opposition’s responsibility in a democracy.
The disagreement highlights the growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as politicians and parties consider alliances that could reshape the contest for the presidency and other elective offices.
