The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a suspected illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, following an investigation into products allegedly carrying falsified registration numbers.
The agency said the operation followed a report highlighting concerns about herbal products bearing questionable NAFDAC registration details.
During surveillance, investigators discovered three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters carrying registration number A7-1827L.
However, checks on NAFDAC’s Automated Product Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS) revealed that the registration number belonged to Greentol Cough Syrup, rather than the herbal bitters, indicating its fraudulent use.
NAFDAC disclosed that the company’s managing director and chief executive officer was absent when its officials carried out the operation.
The company manager was subsequently arrested for further interrogation as investigations into the suspected illegal production and use of falsified registration details continued.
The agency urged Nigerians to provide credible information about suspected illegal manufacturing activities to help strengthen its efforts to protect consumers from potentially unsafe and improperly registered products.
Members of the public can report suspected violations through NAFDAC’s call centre numbers, 0800-1-623322 and 0700-1-623322, or via email at reforms@nafdac.gov.ng.
The latest operation comes amid an ongoing crackdown on counterfeit and illegally manufactured products, including suspected fake alcoholic and energy drinks discovered during recent enforcement activities.
NAFDAC has repeatedly warned consumers to exercise caution when purchasing regulated products and to verify registration details rather than relying solely on labels displayed on packaging.
