Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, are preparing for a decisive encounter against North Korea as they seek to strengthen their chances of advancing at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Nigerian youngsters revived their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico on Tuesday, October 20, after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening Group B fixture.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 25th minute, finishing off Nigeria’s attacking pressure to give the team an important first-half advantage.
The Flamingos continued to search for another goal after the break, but Puerto Rico remained competitive, forcing Nigeria to work hard to protect their lead.
Their persistence eventually paid off in stoppage time when substitute Precious Oscar headed home a cross from Kemi Adegbuyi to seal all three points.
The result offered a timely boost to head coach Akeem Busari’s side, who needed a victory to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage alive.
Nigeria’s next challenge is against North Korea, who defeated Poland 6-1 in the other Group B match. The encounter is expected to be a demanding test for the Flamingos as they pursue qualification for the next round.
The Flamingos will be looking to build on their latest performance and draw inspiration from their bronze-medal finish at the 2022 edition of the competition.
With the group stage approaching its conclusion, the Nigerian team will need another strong display to keep their World Cup ambitions on track.
