The Ebonyi Unity Forum in Anambra State has condemned two separate killings reported in Aguata Local Government Area, calling on residents to remain calm and allow security agencies to investigate the incidents.

The group expressed concern over the deaths of a 23-year-old woman, Mmesoma Umeorini, in Uga community, and an 18-year-old boy in Ori-Eri community. The incidents allegedly involved individuals from Ebonyi State.

In a statement issued on Monday, October 26, 2026, the forum’s President-General, Chief Moses Ofoke, and Secretary, Aloke Stanley, described the incidents as disturbing and called for justice for the victims and their families.

According to the group, Mmesoma was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, identified as Ofoke Chima, following the breakdown of their relationship. The forum also expressed concern over reports that the 18-year-old boy was killed by his father, an indigene of Ebonyi State, and called for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

The forum said no relationship dispute, provocation or family disagreement could justify taking another person’s life.

“The killing of a girlfriend or one’s own child is an act that demands serious attention from the authorities and society at large,” the statement said, stressing that human life must be protected and disputes resolved through peaceful and lawful means.

Forum Seeks Transparent Investigation

The group disclosed that its representatives had visited the State Criminal Investigation Department in Anambra to engage relevant authorities and obtain information about the incidents.

It subsequently held an emergency meeting attended by the Traditional Leader of Non-Indigenes Living in Anambra State, HRH Igwe Amos Nkwuda, and other officials.

The forum called on the Anambra State Police Command, the State CID and other relevant security agencies to conduct comprehensive, impartial and transparent investigations into both deaths.

It urged the authorities to establish the facts and ensure that anyone found responsible is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The group also extended its condolences to the families of the deceased, acknowledging the pain and grief caused by the tragic incidents.

Ebonyi Residents Warned Against Collective Blame

The forum cautioned against profiling and stigmatising Ebonyi indigenes living in Anambra over the alleged actions of individuals.

It maintained that the conduct of any individual should not be used to judge an entire ethnic or state community.

“Ebonyi people are widely recognised for their hard work, peaceful disposition, resilience, hospitality, and commitment to productive living,” the forum stated, reaffirming its commitment to peaceful coexistence with host communities.

The group also urged residents of Uga and Ori-Eri, Ebonyi indigenes living in Anambra, community leaders and young people to avoid retaliation, inflammatory statements and the spread of unverified information.

It stressed that no individual or group should take the law into their own hands.

Call for Peace and Coexistence

The forum appealed to traditional rulers, youth organisations and other community stakeholders to work together to prevent the incidents from damaging relationships between Ebonyi indigenes and their host communities.

It emphasised that justice, accountability and peaceful coexistence must remain the priorities as investigations continue.

The group concluded by reiterating that violence was unacceptable and called on all parties to protect human life, support the bereaved families and allow the relevant authorities to establish the facts.
