Former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad has urged security agencies to investigate a viral video allegedly showing a Nigerian pastor encouraging youths in Plateau State to arm themselves with AK-47 rifles and other dangerous weapons.
Ahmad described the footage as disturbing, warning that statements promoting violence could heighten tensions and threaten public safety.
In a post on his official X account on Sunday, the former aide drew a comparison with an earlier viral video involving a young Muslim whose song was widely condemned as inflammatory, noting that Nigerians across religious divides had called for an investigation.
He questioned why similar concerns should not be raised when a religious leader is allegedly seen making statements that could encourage people to take the law into their own hands.
Ahmad called on the relevant security agencies to take note of the footage and act in accordance with the law.
The video has generated debate over religious leadership, hate speech and the growing security challenges facing communities in Nigeria. Calls for people to arm themselves and retaliate against attackers have raised concerns about the potential for further violence.
The controversy comes amid heightened public concern over another viral video in which youths wearing uniforms associated with the First Aid Group of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS) were allegedly heard calling for AK-47 rifles to attack Christians in Enugu and Jos.
Authorities have previously arrested a suspect in connection with that separate video, while JIBWIS leadership condemned the alleged threats and called for an investigation.
The circumstances surrounding the pastor’s video and the full context of the remarks require proper investigation before responsibility can be established.
