Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has accused a presidential aide and President Bola Tinubu’s son-in-law of allegedly masterminding the attack on him and members of his team in Ekiti State.
Sowore made the allegations while recounting the October 30 incident in Ado-Ekiti, where he and his entourage were reportedly assaulted by suspected political thugs shortly after a radio interview.
In a statement shared on his social media account, the activist identified Sunday Asefon, a Senior Special Assistant to Tinubu on Student Engagement, and Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo, Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, as individuals allegedly connected to the incident.
According to Sowore, information obtained from his sources suggested that Asefon was among those allegedly involved in coordinating the attack.
He further alleged that Ayodeji Akintade Ifeoluwa, whom he described as Asefon’s bodyguard, and a man identified as Sola Adenijo, popularly known as Solar, were among those allegedly deployed during the assault.
Sowore also claimed that Ojo, who is married to Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, the President’s daughter, allegedly mobilised Adenijo for the operation. He did not publicly provide independently verified evidence establishing the alleged involvement of the individuals named.
The activist further alleged that security personnel and individuals connected to a political event in Ekiti had been informed of his presence before the incident. He claimed that a meeting was subsequently held during which the attack was allegedly planned.
Sowore described the incident as an attempt to intimidate him and members of his team because of his persistent criticism of the government.
He recalled an alleged previous threat by Asefon during the latter’s time as president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), insisting that the latest incident would not deter him from his political activities.
The AAC presidential candidate called on the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant security agencies to investigate the allegations, identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the law.
As of the time the report was published, Asefon had not publicly responded to the allegations. The claims against the individuals named have yet to be independently established.
The incident has generated controversy, with Sowore disputing the police account of the confrontation and demanding accountability over the circumstances surrounding the attack.
