Activist and political supporter Aisha Yesufu has urged Nigerians to contribute financially towards Peter Obi’s 2027 presidential campaign, insisting that the former Anambra State governor should not be left to shoulder the cost of the election alone.
Yesufu made the appeal in a video shared on X on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, calling on citizens who desire political change to take an active role in financing the campaign.
According to her, it would be contradictory for Nigerians to demand ownership of the country’s political future while leaving one individual to bear the financial responsibility of pursuing that goal.
“My fellow citizens, Peter Obi cannot do this alone,” she said, urging supporters to contribute whatever amount they could afford.
She added that the campaign should be funded by citizens who believe in its objectives, rather than relying predominantly on the candidate’s personal resources.
Yesufu Recalls 2023 Fundraising Effort
Reflecting on the 2023 presidential election, Yesufu disclosed that Obi had initially been reluctant to embrace public fundraising for his campaign.
She said she had encouraged him to allow supporters to contribute, arguing that financial participation would make citizens more emotionally invested in the political process.
According to the activist, the fundraising initiative eventually received contributions from supporters, and the accounts were made available to address questions about how the money was managed.
Yesufu maintained that the experience demonstrated the importance of involving ordinary Nigerians in supporting a candidate they believe can bring about change.
She, however, argued that the previous arrangement, in which Obi largely financed campaign activities himself, was no longer sustainable.
“It can no longer work. Every one of us has to put in our own widow’s mite,” she said.
The expression “widow’s mite” refers to a contribution, however small, made according to one’s ability.
Campaign Donations Separate From Party Funds
Yesufu clarified that the proposed citizen-led fundraising initiative would be separate from the official finances of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the party under which Obi is expected to contest the 2027 presidential election.
She explained that the party would release its own account details for supporters who wished to donate directly to its activities.
The account associated with the citizen-led initiative, she said, was intended to support activities undertaken by supporters on behalf of Obi’s presidential campaign.
The distinction means that those willing to contribute to Obi’s campaign independently of the party would have a separate channel, while donations intended for the NDC would be handled through the party’s designated arrangements.
Yesufu Promises Transparency
Addressing concerns that could arise over the management of public donations, Yesufu pledged to account for every contribution received during the 2027 campaign.
She cited her handling of the previous fundraising exercise as an example, insisting that donors deserved transparency and accountability.
“In 2023, I was accountable, and I accounted for every dime. And in 2027, by the grace of God, I will also be accountable. And I will account for every dime,” she said.
Her appeal comes as political activities and preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With the cost of electioneering likely to remain a major consideration, Yesufu is advocating a model in which supporters share the financial burden of a campaign through voluntary contributions.
She urged Nigerians who believe in Obi’s political ambition to participate, stressing that even modest donations could contribute to the collective effort.
