Nigerian singer Yemi Alade has explained the inspiration behind her latest studio album, It’s Yemi Alade, revealing that the project was created to push beyond familiar musical territory.
The Afropop star said the album reflects her willingness to experiment with different sounds while remaining connected to the musical influences that shaped her career.
According to Alade, the project combines elements of her established Afropop and Highlife sound with influences from other genres, including disco, techno-inspired rhythms, Kompa and rap.
She described the album as a blend of “something new, something old and something borrowed,” highlighting her desire to explore different creative possibilities rather than remain within a single musical formula.
The 16-track project also features collaborations with several African artistes, including Bien, Njerae, Sofiya Nzau, Spyro, Don Jazzy, Teni, Jeriq and Ferre Gola.
Alade also involved her fans in the naming of the project, asking them to suggest possible titles. After receiving more than 200 suggestions, she eventually settled on It’s Yemi Alade, a title that appeared repeatedly among the submissions.
The singer said the album represents an important stage in her artistic journey, allowing her to embrace experimentation while retaining the identity and influences that have shaped her music.
It’s Yemi Alade is her seventh studio album and was released through Effyzzie Music.
