The National Identity Management Commission has dismissed a viral report claiming that Nigeria’s National Identification Number database had been hacked.

NIMC described the allegation as false and unfounded, saying the video currently circulating on social media is an old report from 2024 that had already been discredited by the commission.

In a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, on Thursday, the commission said its National Identity Database had not been breached or compromised.

NIMC said it operates a multi-layered security system designed to protect the personal information of registered citizens and legal residents, in line with international security standards.

The commission expressed concern over the renewed circulation of the video, warning that unverified reports about the national identity system could mislead Nigerians and create unnecessary panic.

It therefore urged members of the public to disregard the video and obtain information concerning the National Identity Management System only through NIMC’s verified communication channels.

The commission also highlighted its recently introduced NIN Authentication platform, known as NINAuth.

According to NIMC, the platform provides web, API and mobile identity-verification services and is designed to strengthen data protection while giving NIN holders greater control over the use of their personal information.

NIMC said NINAuth requires the explicit consent of individuals before their information is shared for Know Your Customer procedures and other verification purposes.

The commission explained that the system can be used for identity verification in areas including SIM registration, immigration and passport processing, tax-related services and financial transactions, without unnecessarily exposing a person’s raw NIN or other personal information.

NIMC said the initiative forms part of its efforts to comply with the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, which provide a framework for the lawful and transparent handling of personal data.

The commission reiterated its commitment to protecting the identity information of Nigerians and legal residents and said it would continue working with relevant security agencies to strengthen its systems and counter misinformation.
