A northern Nigerian man has sparked reactions online after reportedly declaring that he would not vote for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, despite receiving bags of rice and beans from one of the President’s supporters.
In a viral video, the man expressed gratitude to the individual who gave him the food items but maintained that the gesture would not determine his choice at the ballot box.
According to the man, he appreciated the assistance but remained determined to vote for the candidate he believed was best suited to lead the country.
“I really appreciate him, but I won’t vote for Tinubu in the 2027 election. I will vote for the right candidate,” he reportedly said.
The man was seen displaying the bags of rice and beans he allegedly received, emphasising that accepting assistance did not automatically translate into political allegiance.
His declaration has triggered discussions on social media about voters’ freedom to make independent choices, the role of material gifts in political mobilisation and whether such gestures can influence electoral decisions.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general election, the incident has renewed conversations about the importance of issue-based campaigns, accountability and voters choosing candidates based on their performance and policies rather than material inducements.
