The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a fresh timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, bringing the polls forward from the dates previously announced.
Under the revised schedule, the presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027, with the governorship and state assembly elections set for March 6.
INEC explained that the adjustment followed the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which replaced the 2022 Electoral Act and introduced new timelines for the conduct of electoral activities.
With the new timetable, campaigns for presidential and National Assembly candidates are expected to begin on August 19, 2026, while campaigns for governorship and State House of Assembly candidates will commence on September 9, 2026.
The commission said the revised schedule would serve as a guide for political parties, candidates and other stakeholders as preparations gather pace for the 2027 general elections.
The announcement comes as political activities ahead of the elections continue to intensify across the country.
