Senate President Godswill Akpabio has defended the economic record of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying the government inherited a severely troubled economy when it assumed office in 2023.
Akpabio made the remarks in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, while receiving members of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, TETFund and NELFund, led by its chairman, Senator Dandutse Mohammed.
According to the Senate President, the economic situation confronting the country at the beginning of Tinubu’s administration was so difficult that 27 states were reportedly unable to meet their obligations to workers and pensioners.
He argued that the administration’s reforms and economic policies had since changed the situation, insisting that the government had achievements it could present to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.
Akpabio said Tinubu had introduced new approaches to governance and economic management, describing the President as a leader willing to pursue unconventional solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
He maintained that the administration had recorded progress in several areas, including the economy, agriculture, security, education and fiscal policy.
The Senate President also took a swipe at the opposition, arguing that some of its members were aware of the government’s achievements but were unlikely to acknowledge them because of their political interests.
He expressed confidence that the achievements of the Tinubu administration would form a major part of the APC’s campaign message ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Akpabio further defended the performance of the 10th National Assembly, saying lawmakers had passed legislation designed to improve the welfare of Nigerians.
He urged senators who may not return to the National Assembly after the 2027 elections to remain committed to the APC and Tinubu’s administration.
Earlier, Mohammed said the committee’s visit was connected to its constitutional responsibilities and provided an opportunity to pay a courtesy call on the Senate President.
The visit comes as the Tinubu administration continues to highlight its economic reforms and policy measures as part of its case for another term in office.
