Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has recounted how a public appeal for an ailing colleague led to financial assistance from the government, revealing that the actor received ₦500,000 just a week after he called for help.
Edochie shared the experience during an interview at his residence in Enugu, explaining that he used the opportunity to draw attention to his colleague’s health challenges and the need for assistance.
According to the legendary actor, his appeal received a positive response, with the government reportedly sending the money to his colleague the following week.
Recounting the incident, Edochie explained that he had appealed to the government to intervene when one of his fellow actors fell ill.
He said the assistance arrived within a week of his appeal, although he did not disclose the identity of the beneficiary or specify which government provided the funds.
Why Pete Edochie Says He Relates to Leaders Differently
The veteran actor also spoke about his relationship with Nigeria’s political leaders, explaining that his age and life experience influence how he interacts with them.
Edochie noted that he was older than the country’s president and all its state governors, describing his interactions with them as similar to those between a father and his sons.
“I’m older than all the governors and president, so when I talk to them, it’s like a father talking to a son,” he said.
His comments have drawn attention to the role influential figures in the entertainment industry can play in bringing the struggles of their colleagues to the attention of government officials.
Concerns Over the Welfare of Veteran Actors
Edochie’s account has also highlighted concerns about the financial and medical challenges facing some members of Nigeria’s film industry, particularly older performers who may struggle to work because of illness.
His intervention illustrates how public appeals can help secure assistance for individuals facing difficult circumstances.
However, the actor did not reveal further details about his colleague’s condition or the circumstances surrounding the government’s intervention.
