Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the immediate rehabilitation and reconstruction of deteriorating roads across the state, with the government taking advantage of improved weather conditions to accelerate work.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC), Engineer Tokunbo Ajanaku, disclosed this on Thursday during an inspection of ongoing road projects, assuring residents that efforts were being intensified to improve road conditions.
Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area is among the major areas receiving attention, with reconstruction work ongoing on Godwin Omonuwa Road, Taiwo Street, Salamotu Street, Peter Agah Street and Ibeh Street.
Ajanaku explained that the projects were initiated on the governor’s directive to address infrastructure challenges, improve connectivity and make daily journeys easier for residents, traders and other road users.
He said rehabilitating the roads would help reduce travel difficulties and transport costs, improve road safety and support commercial activities in affected communities.
The inspection also covered other projects across Lagos, including Ogunnusi Road in Ojodu Local Council Development Area, Awolowo Way in Ikeja, Lanre Awolokun Road and Idowu Olaitan Street in Shomolu, as well as Idimu-Ikotun Road in Alimosho.
According to Ajanaku, heavy rainfall during the wet season often makes asphalt laying and permanent repairs difficult. The corporation, however, continued emergency interventions and routine maintenance to keep critical routes accessible.
With more favourable weather conditions, the agency is now stepping up comprehensive repairs designed to provide more durable results.
He added that many road maintenance activities were scheduled for nighttime to minimise traffic congestion and reduce disruption to businesses and commuters.
The general manager appealed to residents to remain patient, noting that repairs would be extended to additional locations based on road conditions, traffic volume, urgency and available resources.
He also urged residents and motorists to protect public infrastructure by avoiding indiscriminate refuse disposal in drainage channels, spilling petroleum products on roads and discharging wastewater onto road surfaces.
Ajanaku stressed that maintaining roads required shared responsibility between the government and the public, warning that practices that damage road surfaces could undermine rehabilitation efforts.
The state government’s latest intervention comes amid ongoing concerns over road conditions and traffic challenges across Lagos, where residents rely heavily on road networks for commuting and commercial activities.
