Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has challenged claims by Vice-President Kashim Shettima that Peter Obi presented “bogus statistics”, insisting that most of the figures cited by the former Anambra State governor were correct.

The exchange has added another layer to Nigeria’s intensifying political debate, with questions over economic data, government performance and the accuracy of statistics used by political leaders taking centre stage.

Kwankwaso’s response comes amid growing political discussions ahead of the 2027 general election.

Kwankwaso made the remarks during an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, saying he had reviewed Obi’s statistics and found most of them accurate. He acknowledged that mistakes could occur but disagreed with Shettima’s characterisation of Obi’s figures.

The NDC vice-presidential candidate also praised Obi’s familiarity with development statistics across Nigeria and other parts of the world, describing it as an advantage for a presidential candidate.

Kwankwaso said their shared vision for Nigeria was one of the reasons they decided to work together under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The exchange has added to the political debate surrounding the 2027 general election, particularly over economic comparisons, development strategies and the credibility of figures presented by political leaders.

What do you think? Is Kwankwaso right to defend Obi’s statistics, or does Shettima have a point?
