The Rivers State Police Command has removed two senior officers from their positions following allegations that suspected cultists renovated the Abuloma Police Outpost in Port Harcourt and later celebrated the completion of the project at the facility.

The affected officers are the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the police outpost. Both officers have been queried and relieved of their duties pending the outcome of an investigation.

The development followed the circulation of a video on social media showing suspected cult members at the renovated facility on Thursday, 15 October 2026. Some police officers were also seen alongside the group during what appeared to be a ceremony marking the completion of the renovation.

In a statement issued on Friday, the command said Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju had ordered a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether the allegations were substantiated.

The investigation will identify the individuals or groups who financed the renovation, establish which police officers authorised the project and determine whether the proper procedures were followed.

The command warned that police facilities must not be used by suspected criminal groups to gain public recognition, legitimacy or influence.

However, the police clarified that legitimate contributions from members of the public towards improving police facilities are permitted under Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, provided such support does not compromise police independence, security or professional standards.

The command added that no donation or assistance would shield anyone from investigation or prosecution.

It assured the public that appropriate disciplinary and legal action would be taken against anyone found culpable, while reaffirming its commitment to tackling cultism and organised crime in Rivers State.

The incident has raised concerns about accountability within the police and the circumstances under which private individuals or groups can fund improvements to security facilities.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to clarify whether the renovation received the necessary approvals and whether any officers breached established professional standards.
