President Bola Tinubu’s administration has released approximately ₦4.04 billion to settle outstanding severance benefits owed to 600 former employees of the defunct Nigeria Airways Limited.
The Federal Ministry of Finance announced the development on Monday, October 19, 2026, describing the payment as the second tranche of the government’s ongoing effort to clear the airline’s outstanding obligations
According to the ministry, the latest disbursement covers verified beneficiaries in batches 010 and 011.
The gross severance entitlements for the 600 beneficiaries amounted to ₦4.251 billion. After deductions of approximately ₦212.55 million, the net amount released for payment stood at ₦4.038 billion.
The latest payment follows the ₦18 billion settlement announced in September 2026 for 2,700 former Nigeria Airways workers across the first nine batches. With the latest release, the number of beneficiaries covered by the two announced payment tranches has risen to 3,300. Government Explains Payment Process
The ministry said the disbursement was being carried out in batches, following the verification of beneficiaries’ employment records and personal details to ensure that approved entitlements reach the rightful recipients.
The government also acknowledged the prolonged wait experienced by former employees and their families, stating that it remained committed to resolving legitimate outstanding claims while protecting public funds through appropriate verification procedures.
Nigeria Airways, once the country’s national carrier, ceased operations in 2003 and was liquidated in 2004. Since then, many former employees have spent years pursuing unpaid entitlements, with some passing away before receiving their benefits.
The latest release represents another step towards settling the long-standing obligations inherited from the airline’s collapse.
However, the Finance Ministry did not specify when the individual beneficiaries would receive their payments or disclose the total amount of outstanding claims that may still remain unresolved.
