The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has met with British government officials and Nigerians living in the United Kingdom as part of consultations on Nigeria’s political and economic future ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi disclosed the meetings in a post on his X account on Thursday, October 22, 2026, explaining that discussions centred on the country’s leadership challenges and the need to rebuild Nigeria.
The former Anambra State governor said he arrived in London early Wednesday after travelling from Basel, Switzerland, before beginning a series of engagements with stakeholders.
He later attended a meeting organised by the COPDEM Chief and the NDC Director of Diaspora Affairs, which brought together Nigerians and other stakeholders based in the UK.
According to Obi, the discussions focused on tackling poor leadership, corruption and the lack of accountability, which he believes continue to undermine Nigeria’s development.
He argued that these challenges have contributed to the difficulties many Nigerians face in accessing quality healthcare, education and decent employment.
The former governor stressed that the country needed a system where hard work was rewarded and citizens could succeed regardless of their backgrounds or political connections.
“Nigerians deserve a country where every life matters, where hard work is rewarded, and where every citizen has a fair opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or connections,” he stated.
Obi also called for a Nigeria where opportunities would be based on merit rather than privileged relationships, insisting that the country must work for all citizens and not just a select few.
The overseas engagements come as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections. The NDC had earlier postponed the inauguration of its National Campaign Council from October 20 to October 26, citing Obi’s overseas engagements.
The meetings have placed the opposition politician’s international consultations in focus as he continues to promote his vision for governance and national development.
