Professor Kamene Okonjo, the mother of World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has died at the age of 96.

The renowned sociologist and matriarch of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family of Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, reportedly passed away on Friday, October 23, 2026.

Her death was announced in a statement issued by the Palace Secretary of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, on behalf of the royal family.

Professor Okonjo was the wife of the late Obi Professor Chukwuka Okonjo, the former traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku, with whom she shared 66 years of marriage.

She was also the mother of the kingdom’s reigning traditional ruler, Obi Ifechukwude Anishi Okonjo II, alongside other children, including Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The royal family described the deceased as a woman of exceptional intellect, humility, compassion and dedication to humanity, noting that her contributions extended beyond her community and Nigeria.

An internationally recognised academic, Professor Okonjo distinguished herself through her work in sociology, intellectual contributions and lifelong advocacy for women’s rights and empowerment.

Despite her academic accomplishments, the family said she remained humble and gracious, earning the admiration and affection of those who encountered her.

Beyond her professional achievements, she was celebrated as a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who played a significant role in the royal family.

The family noted that her wisdom, kindness and exemplary character would remain an enduring source of inspiration to future generations.

“While we mourn her passing, we celebrate a life exceptionally well lived,” the royal family stated, expressing confidence in its Christian faith and the belief that she was resting peacefully with the Lord.

Following the announcement, condolences were extended to her children, relatives and the people of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom as they mourn the loss of a respected scholar and community matriarch.

Professor Okonjo’s death marks the end of a remarkable life devoted to scholarship, family, service to humanity and the advancement of women.

May her soul rest in perfect peace.
