For five decades, Eko Hotels & Suites has played a prominent role in shaping Lagos’ hospitality industry, welcoming international visitors, business leaders, government officials and entertainment figures while helping position Nigeria as a destination for major events.
The hotel marked its golden jubilee with a Legacy Gala and Awards night on 2 October 2026, bringing together more than 1,000 guests for an evening celebrating its history, achievements and contribution to African hospitality.
Held at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos, the celebration combined entertainment, cultural expression and recognition of the people who have helped sustain the institution over the years.
Among the distinguished guests were Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat. Internationally recognized musician Wyclef Jean and Nigerian highlife star Flavour provided entertainment, bringing African and Caribbean musical influences to the occasion.
Five decades of hospitality and enterprise
Since its establishment, Eko Hotels & Suites has evolved beyond providing accommodation to hosting conferences, corporate meetings, entertainment events, cultural programmes and major social gatherings.
Its continued presence in Lagos’ business and tourism landscape illustrates the role large hospitality establishments can play in attracting visitors, supporting businesses and creating employment.
The hotel’s golden jubilee also highlighted the contributions of its workforce, including housekeepers, engineers, chefs, waiters, security personnel, event planners and administrative staff whose daily efforts underpin its operations.
The anniversary served as a reminder that sustaining a hospitality brand requires more than impressive buildings and facilities. Consistent service, staff commitment, investment and the ability to adapt to changing customer expectations are also essential.
Expanding beyond accommodation
Over the years, Eko Hotels has increasingly explored ways to connect hospitality with tourism, entertainment and the creative economy.
Initiatives such as Tropical Christmas Wonderland, Theatre @ Eko Hotels and other destination experiences are designed to give visitors additional reasons to visit the property while creating opportunities for performers, production teams and other service providers.
The approach reflects a broader opportunity for Nigeria’s tourism industry: turning cultural assets, entertainment and hospitality infrastructure into experiences that attract visitors and generate economic activity.
Major conferences and entertainment events can also support businesses in transport, catering, retail, logistics and event production, extending the benefits beyond the hotel itself.
Africa’s cultural identity takes centre stage
The Legacy Gala celebrated African creativity and the continent’s capacity to deliver sophisticated hospitality experiences.
The event also drew attention to the importance of investing in local culture, music, fashion, cuisine and storytelling as part of the visitor experience.
For Nigeria, developing these assets into commercially sustainable tourism products could help diversify economic opportunities and create jobs, provided the sector receives the necessary infrastructure, investment and policy support.
Looking towards the next 50 years
The golden jubilee was part of a wider programme that included the Africa Legacy Summit, held earlier in May. The summit brought together stakeholders to discuss tourism, culture, investment, sustainability and the future of African hospitality.
Together, the summit and gala provided opportunities to reflect on the industry’s progress and the work still required to strengthen Africa’s position in the global tourism market.
Under the leadership of Managing Director Ghassan Faddoul, General Manager Danny Kioupouroglou and the wider management team, Eko Hotels faces the continuing challenge of maintaining its reputation while adapting to changing market demands and emerging competition.
As the institution enters its next chapter, its future will depend on sustaining service standards, investing in people, innovating and creating experiences that appeal to both Nigerian and international visitors.
Fifty years after opening its doors, Eko Hotels & Suites remains a recognizable part of Lagos’ hospitality landscape. Its golden jubilee celebrates not only the longevity of a hotel, but also the people, enterprise and ambition behind an enduring Nigerian institution.
