‘Changing the Manager Won’t Fix Anything’ — Schmeichel Blames Man United Leadership for Club’s Struggles

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has criticised the club’s leadership, arguing that sacking manager Michael Carrick would not solve the problems affecting the English Premier League giants.

The former Denmark international believes the club’s struggles go beyond the manager, pointing instead to decisions made by those running the club.

Schmeichel expressed his frustration amid growing uncertainty over Carrick’s future following Manchester United’s disappointing run of results.

Schmeichel Questions United’s Leadership

The former United shot-stopper said the club had repeatedly changed managers without addressing what he considers the deeper issues behind its decline.

“It drives me crazy. Who are these people who say that ‘he’s a good manager’? We’ve tried everyone; it’s not about the managers. It’s about the leadership of the club,” Schmeichel said.

He argued that replacing Carrick without resolving the club’s structural problems would leave the next manager facing similar difficulties.

Eddie Howe Also Comes Under Discussion

Schmeichel also questioned whether appointing Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe would significantly improve Manchester United’s fortunes.

He suggested that although a new manager might initially inspire the players, such an improvement would not necessarily translate into sustained success.

“If we bring Eddie Howe in, what’s he going to do? He’s going to face the same problems as Carrick with the same group of players,” he said.

Schmeichel added that a short-term boost would not be enough to put United back in contention for the Premier League title.

His comments underline his belief that the club needs to address its wider leadership and decision-making issues rather than rely on another managerial appointment.

Carrick Faces Pressure Amid Poor Results

Carrick’s position has come under scrutiny following a difficult spell that included a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth. The result extended United’s winless run to eight matches across competitions.

Despite the pressure, the club had kept Carrick in charge ahead of its Premier League meeting with Chelsea, giving him an opportunity to improve results.

Manchester United have struggled to recapture their former dominance since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Several managerial appointments have delivered cup success, but the club has yet to establish the sustained consistency associated with its most successful years.

Schmeichel’s latest intervention adds to the debate over whether United’s problems are primarily tactical, linked to the players, or rooted in the club’s leadership and long-term planning.
