Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has warned his players to prepare for another demanding encounter against Brighton & Hove Albion when both sides meet again in the Premier League this weekend, following their dramatic Carabao Cup clash.
City secured a place in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night after surviving a determined Brighton challenge to draw 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium before winning 4-3 on penalties.
The two teams will return to the same venue on Saturday, October 31, for a league encounter that could have important implications for the Premier League title race.
Maresca acknowledged that Brighton’s attacking style and recent performances would make the rematch difficult, despite City escaping elimination in the midweek contest.
“They are in a brilliant moment,” the City manager said, highlighting Brighton’s ability to score goals and their willingness to attack opponents aggressively.
He added that Brighton consistently pressed high and adopted a man-to-man approach, a strategy he expected them to maintain in the league fixture.
The midweek encounter demonstrated the threat Brighton pose. They took the lead through Malick Yalcouye before Mateo Kovacic equalized for City with a long-range effort.
Georginio Rutter restored Brighton’s advantage shortly after half-time, but a free-kick from Rayan Cherki was deflected into the net by City defender Vitor Reis to force the match into a penalty shootout.
City eventually prevailed after goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli saved penalties from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk, while Cherki converted the decisive spot-kick to send the holders into the last eight.
Both managers had made significant changes to their starting line-ups for the cup encounter, and they are expected to restore more regular starters for Saturday’s league meeting.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler will be eager to see his team turn their promising performance into a league victory, having felt that his players had created enough opportunities to win the cup tie.
City, meanwhile, will seek to maintain their position near the top of the table as the title race develops. They are level on points with defending champions Arsenal, while Brighton remain within reach of the leading sides.
Maresca, who took charge following Pep Guardiola’s departure at the end of last season, said his focus remained on improving the team and winning matches as the new project continued to develop.
The City manager also stressed that the ambition remained unchanged across competitions, despite the demands of competing in the Premier League and domestic cup tournaments.
With Brighton demonstrating their ability to trouble City in the cup, Saturday’s rematch is expected to provide another stern examination of the champions’ resilience and defensive organization.
