A 15-year-old Ghanaian boy, identified as Javits Frimpong, has been shot dead while on his way to school in the Bronx, New York, in the United States, sparking renewed concerns about youth violence and the safety of schoolchildren.
Frimpong was shot in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2026, near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont area of the Bronx, according to police reports.
The teenager was taken to St Barnabas Hospital by emergency responders but later died from his injuries.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the killing and are searching for three teenage suspects believed to have fled the scene after the shooting. No arrests had been reported at the time of the latest updates, and investigators had yet to establish an official motive.
Police Search for Three Suspects
Investigators said the suspects were reportedly between 16 and 18 years old and were last seen wearing black clothing and blue surgical masks.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured an individual fleeing the area in clothing matching the description provided by the police.
According to accounts of the incident, Frimpong managed to run approximately a block after being shot before collapsing. He was subsequently taken to hospital, where medical personnel were unable to save his life.
Police are continuing to gather evidence, speak with witnesses and examine available surveillance footage as they work to identify those responsible.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
Father Suspects Possible Link to Bullying
The teenager’s father, Thomas Frimpong, believes the killing may be connected to bullying his son allegedly experienced at school. However, police have not confirmed any link between the reported bullying and the fatal shooting.
Thomas disclosed that the school principal had contacted him just days before the incident to inform him that two students had been involved in a conflict with his son and had been suspended for a week.
The grieving father said his son had also complained that another student repeatedly bullied him during lunchtime and that he had reported the problem on several occasions.
Thomas maintained that his son was not the aggressor in the earlier confrontation, adding that school officials had told him Javits was defending himself.
The allegations have raised questions about whether more could have been done to address the teenager’s reported experiences before the fatal incident. Nevertheless, investigators have not publicly established that the school dispute led to the shooting.
Teenager Had Moved From Ghana a Year Ago
Frimpong reportedly moved from Ghana to New York about a year ago to live with his father in the hope of building a better future. His mother remains in Ghana.
Thomas described his son as quiet, intelligent and precious to him, struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.
The father, who works as a taxi driver, said his last conversation with Javits before the shooting was a reminder to get to school on time.
What should have been an ordinary school morning instead ended in tragedy, leaving the family devastated and the local community demanding answers.
Community Calls for Action Against Youth Violence
The killing has shaken residents in the Crotona Park neighbourhood, with community members expressing concern about violence involving young people.
Some residents have called for parents to pay closer attention to their children’s behaviour and associations, while others have urged authorities to expand after-school programmes and other activities that can keep teenagers engaged in positive environments.
The incident has also renewed concerns about the consequences of unresolved bullying and conflicts among young people, particularly when disputes escalate beyond school grounds.
While the father’s account has brought the bullying allegations into focus, the investigation must establish whether those concerns were connected to the shooting.
For now, police are continuing their search for the suspects as Frimpong’s family mourns the loss of a teenager whose life was cut short while he was simply trying to get to school.
