Residents of Ikpeshi in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State have appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo to intervene urgently in a lingering traditional leadership crisis, warning that the dispute could threaten peace and unity in the community.
The appeal follows the state government’s decision to terminate the appointment of Nicholas Odamah III as regent of the Ikpeshi/Egbigere Clan and appoint Lukeman Momodu in his place, a development that has reportedly sparked dissatisfaction among sections of the community.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Peggy Agbo said the decision had raised concerns among residents, particularly over its implications for stability and the existing traditional leadership arrangements.
Agbo questioned the reasons behind the government’s latest action, arguing that the intervention had created uncertainty over the leadership of the clan.
She appealed to the governor to review the decision, stressing that the community needed a fair and transparent resolution to prevent the dispute from escalating.
According to her, failure to address the situation promptly could lead to increased tension, loss of lives, destruction of property, disruption of economic activities and lasting divisions among families and kindreds.
The community urged Okpebholo to suspend the decision and engage relevant stakeholders in an impartial process that would restore confidence and help maintain peace.
Agbo also called for due process to be respected, insisting that an urgent resolution was necessary to prevent residents from taking matters into their own hands.
However, the Edo State Government has defended its action. Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said the decision was taken in line with court rulings.
The disagreement highlights the continuing challenges surrounding traditional leadership disputes in parts of Edo State, where questions over succession and the authority to recognise traditional rulers have sometimes generated prolonged tensions.
The community’s appeal now places renewed attention on the state government’s handling of the crisis, with residents hoping that dialogue, fairness and respect for the law will prevent further division.
As the dispute continues, the immediate concern remains the preservation of peace and the protection of lives and property while the issues surrounding the traditional leadership are addressed.
