Chelsea Receive Injury Boost as Emiliano Martínez Targets Early Return

Chelsea have received encouraging news over the recovery of goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, with the Argentine reportedly hoping to return to action earlier than initially expected following surgery on a fractured jaw.

The 34-year-old sustained the injury during Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on 17 October, following a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

Martínez received lengthy treatment before being carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital, where further examinations confirmed the fracture. He subsequently underwent successful surgery.

The goalkeeper had initially indicated that he expected to be sidelined for several weeks. However, recent reports suggest that his recovery is progressing positively, raising hopes that he could return ahead of schedule.

No official comeback date has been confirmed, and Chelsea are expected to continue monitoring his condition before determining when he can safely resume playing.

Penders Steps In During Martínez’s Absence

Martínez’s injury has created an opportunity for young Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders to feature for Chelsea.

The 21-year-old replaced Martínez against Everton before making his first Premier League start in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Although he endured a difficult outing against Spurs, he produced a more encouraging performance against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, making important saves before the Blues were eliminated on penalties.

Despite Penders’ growing experience, an early return for Martínez would provide manager Xabi Alonso with a significant boost as Chelsea navigate a demanding run of fixtures.

Martínez joined Chelsea from Aston Villa during the summer for a reported £7.5 million and had started six consecutive Premier League matches before suffering the injury.

The Argentine international, who played a key role in Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, brings considerable experience to Chelsea’s goalkeeping department.

Chelsea will be hoping for a swift but safe recovery as they seek greater consistency in the Premier League. For now, Martínez’s return remains dependent on his rehabilitation, with no confirmed date for his comeback.
