Nigerian Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has criticised Nigerians who participated in protests against bad governance but have since turned to campaigning for politicians.

The singer made the remarks during an appearance on the I Wanna Talk podcast, where he reflected on the 2020 #EndSARS protests and the hopes many Nigerians had for meaningful change.

Davido said the massive participation and determination displayed by young Nigerians during the demonstrations initially convinced him that the country was on the verge of positive transformation.

However, he explained that his optimism gradually faded when normal activities, including parties and celebrations, resumed shortly after the protests.

According to him, the development made him question whether the collective determination witnessed during the demonstrations would translate into lasting change.

The singer also acknowledged the economic hardship facing many Nigerians, admitting that he could not fully advise those struggling financially because he was not experiencing the same level of hardship.

Davido stressed that meaningful national transformation requires changes in the attitudes of both political leaders and citizens.

He argued that Nigeria’s challenges cannot be resolved unless the people themselves change their mindset and remain committed to demanding accountability from those in power.

Expressing his disappointment, the singer observed that some individuals who once stood against bad governance were now actively campaigning for politicians.

He further suggested that people who claim to represent the interests of ordinary Nigerians sometimes abandon those principles after gaining political power.

Davido’s comments have renewed attention on the relationship between political loyalty, public accountability and the expectations Nigerians have of those who campaign for change.

The discussion also raises questions about the consistency of political activists and supporters, particularly as the country approaches another election cycle.
