Vice President Kashim Shettima has warned that Nigeria will no longer tolerate the mistreatment or dehumanisation of its citizens living in South Africa.
Shettima made the statement while speaking at the State House during a meeting with members of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation South Africa, who visited him in Abuja.
The Vice President said the Federal Government was concerned about reports of discrimination and other forms of ill-treatment faced by Nigerians residing in South Africa.
He stressed that the government has a responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of Nigerians wherever they live and would continue to engage relevant authorities to address issues affecting its citizens abroad.
Shettima also called for stronger cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa, describing the relationship between both countries as important to the development of the African continent.
He acknowledged the contributions of Nigerians living in South Africa to the country’s economy and broader society, noting that the diaspora community remains an important part of Nigeria’s international presence.
The Vice President urged Nigerian organisations in South Africa to remain united and work with the Nigerian government to address challenges affecting members of the community.
He further encouraged Nigerians abroad to continue representing the country positively while respecting the laws of their host countries.
Shettima assured the delegation that the Federal Government would continue to strengthen diplomatic engagement with South African authorities and pursue measures aimed at protecting the welfare and interests of Nigerians living in the country.
He emphasised that Nigeria values its relationship with South Africa but would not compromise when it comes to the safety, dignity and fundamental rights of its citizens.
The Vice President’s remarks come amid ongoing concerns over the treatment of some Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, including reports of xenophobia, discrimination and difficulties faced by foreign nationals.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that Nigerians abroad receive appropriate support and protection through diplomatic channels.
